Attention youth from North Philly, Hunting Park, and South Philly.
Want to make your community better? Do you have something to say about education in your community? Interested in a community service internship? Do you want to learn from your neighbors as well as those outside the community?
Apply to be a community researcher with The Education in our Barrios Project, #BarrioEdPHL
#BarrioEdPHL, is a participatory research study of education and community issues in Latino neighborhoods in Philadelphia. Based out of Swarthmore College, #BarrioEdPHL seeks to connect with community leaders to share their ideas about education in Philadelphia’s Latino neighborhoods.
Co-researchers will join college students and faculty to participate in workshops on social science research, digital media, and civic engagement, including a week-long institute in June 2015. We will learn how to record video and audio interviews, do archival research, and analyze existing documents and data. We will learn to share our findings using digital media, such as film, blogging, and social media (Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook). The experience will begin in May and end in December, with July and August off.
Co-researchers will ideally be between the ages of 16 and 23. We will help co-researchers get high school credit or community service hours for their participation. Travel expenses will be paid for, including trips to area colleges and research sites, and food will be offered. This internship experience is currently unpaid.
To apply to the project, or if you have questions, please email Swarthmore College Professor Edwin Mayorga at email@example.com or call (347) 708-0762.
